The center of Oviedo is enclosed by the main large streets in a circular design and surrounded by beautiful large mountains. For me it was very symbolic representation of how Asturias made me feel, like being wrapped in a secure and comforting blanket during a time that felt very out of control.
The two-toned affect is created through a layer process of mordant printing. The mordant is applied like paint, invisible at first, but it anchors pigment to the fibers. When the fabric meets the dye bath, the design awakens—and the hidden pattern reveals itself.

Relationships become such a part of us – at times they are an equal give and take, other times you may need more of their support and vice versa. The strength of my own relationships (spiritual, familial, fraternal,) carried me through this season.

Title: Finally A Breath of Fresh Air I & II

Four months after finding out my brother had suddenly died I found my self with a pulmonary embolism in my right lung. Hospitalized and unable to do anything but be still, I often stared out the window of my hospital room into the bright green forest and for the first time in a long time felt a sense of peace.
Lush greens created through a process of hand-dyed indigo with weld and cyanotype printed plants on top. Embellished with gold and bronze beads on a linen and cotton blend canvas.

For me, butterflies hold a lot of symbolism of hope and remembrance often I see them as little signs from loved ones that are gone.

Title: My North Star

The North Star is a fixed point above the North Pole and provides the most reliable navigation – not only is it a geographically sign but it can also symbolize guidance, hope, steadfastness, and purpose offering light to help guide us through uncertainty in our own lives.
Created with quilt and dyeing techniques inspired by African American and West African craft, hand-dyed with onion skins and weld on a linen and cotton blend canvas.

Title: Just Surrender

The need to control and have certainty is a powerful energy that I found myself wrestling with constantly at the expense of my mental, spiritual, and emotional health. In such a chaotic period – moving during a pandemic, little knowledge of the language, wrestling with loss and feeling a sense of little control over my body, I had to come to terms with the reality that not every situation was worth fighting against and that surrender was not giving up but letting go and trusting that everything was going to be okay.
Soft pastels sketched onto a hand-dyed fabric using avocado pits and onion skins, embellished with cyanotype printed and sewn flowers.

Renewal is defined as replacing what isn’t working; repairing or mending what still has value; and rebirthing or coming alive again. Coming out the other side of this monumental life phase felt like a paradox of being changed completely but still myself.
